Areola Tattoo Aftercare

1. Before cleaning your new tattoo, WASH YOUR HANDS!

2. Remove the dressing after returning home or after 12 hours.

3. Wash your tattoo with warm soapy water using only your fingertips very gently. The best time clean your tattoo would be in the shower.

4. Pat your tattoo dry with a towel. DO NOT RUB! Leave to air dry for approx. 10-15 minutes.

5. Apply a very small amount of cream to your tattoo. Anything more than an extremely thin layer will suffocate the tattoo leading to problems with the healing process. We recommend the aftercare we sell which is either “Tattoo Aftercare” or “ Hustle Butter.”

6. Cover your tattoo in one layer of cling film, whilst repeating the above process 2-3 times a day.

7. After 48hrs you may leave the tattoo uncovered but still apply the cream 2-3 times a day.

8. DO NOT SUBMERSE your tattoo in water for at least 1 week! (i.e, baths, swimming pools etc.)

9. It will take approximately 4 weeks before your tattoo is fully healed. After the 1st week, you will find it may look shiny with skin peeling. DO NOT scratch or pick at the tattoo! Placing a cold flannel or tapping it with your fingertips can relieve the irritation.

Common sense prevails. Wash your hands and follow the above instructions as this will enable your tattoo to heal quicker without any colour loss.

What is a Tattoo?

1. The basic principle is for the needles to puncture the skin with a pigment in a fixative solution which will be placed into the holes punctured from the needles. As a result of needle going into skin the small amount of blood and bodily fluids will rise to the surface similar to when you either graze or cut the skin. It is necessary to keep this area moist with a thin layer of cream to stop a dry scab forming as it is very easy to knock or pick at the scab as some people are prone to doing.

2. Tattoos are painful, some areas more than others and larger tattoos will take longer to heal. Be aware of your tattoo if it has been carried out on folded skin i.e. elbow, shoulder, neck, wrist, knee etc. it may need more attention.

3. We have come across a minority who have reactions to some plasters and also cling film this usually shows up in some red dots around the tattoo. You can deal with this quite easily by taking antihistamine tablets and applying a thin layer of cream and you will find this should clear up the spots and any irritation. (do not apply antihistamine cream onto tattoo – only around the area only)

4. If you work in an industry using chemicals, i.e. hair and beauty or if you work with foods especially raw meats then it is advisable to use cling film during working hours for the first week after your tattoo.

5. Swimming pools/saunas/hot tubs contain a small amount of chlorine (bleach) therefore it is not advisable to use a swimming pool/sauna/hot tubs for one week if you have a fresh tattoo.

6. If you find yourself in a position where you have either forgotten or run out of our aftercare cream, there are products such as E45, Coco butter and Bepanthen are available at most pharmacies.

7. Look upon your tattoo as you would when you graze your skin, you would apply cream and wash the area as it is effectively an open wound and is susceptible to infection if not cared for correctly.
